Dental research has made possible momentous development of latest technologies, equipment, materials, pharmacological and diagnostic products for the profession. The research priorities for each profession, specifically dentistry, vary depending on the nature and severity of respective problems. Thrust areas in research vary depending on the pattern of disease burden and socioeconomic conditions.

In pedodontic perspective, published research helps to reformat trends, offers optimum patient care, and informs the specialist about oral health and disease conditions. This research comes from various resources including postgraduate institutions and private practice. In India, dental research is integrated compulsorily only as a part of postgraduate curriculum. Also, a big gap is felt between the clinical and research approach in our profession, as the key factors of educational evaluation, scope, and categories of research experience, diverse philosophies of the faculty toward research, and the repercussions of these factors would have on the outcome on pedodontics in India. Truly, the clinical practice of pedodontics needs to be evidence based and supported by the best available data. Expert opinions should not be the sole drivers of the profession. Wherever the evidence or science is lacking, research needs to be conducted to answer the questions.

Thus, we propose to formulate a strategic blueprint to outline pedodontic research opportunities which would improve oral health. This would largely depend on providing research training and propagating health information through basic and clinical research. Research thrust areas are thus proposed to designate priorities for conducting evidence-based studies in the specialty.

Through this editorial, I propose a list of specific questions and topics which could be addressed through evidence-based research trials and form the basic thrust of pedodontics:

  1. Interdisciplinary pediatric dentistry
  2. Biomarkers and saliva
  3. Pediatric oral cancer
  4. Minimal intervention dentistry
  5. Trauma and sports dentistry.

These areas with specific and strategically planned research questions would provide evidence-based data which would further enhance the standards of pediatric dental clinical practice in India. Appropriately, opportunities all over, only if one has the vision to see them and alertness to grab them, it would be useful and rewarding .
