The pivotal facet of academia in today's era seems to be constant scientific appraisal and skill development. In this regard, research does prove to be key learning activity.

Research for knowledge, scientific appraisal, or mere publication points?

Perhaps, this compulsion of points has given birth to an additional commerce called the scientific journals.

Journals are omnipresent; print, online, spam, and ghost! The worldwide web has reformed the publication of and access to academic journals.

Are these journals the ultimate answer for every dentist – in clinics or academics, young or old, undergraduate student of postgraduate guide?

Analyse, how many dental professionals who read scientific literature published in journals, actually apply the knowledge gained to their routine practice? Seems to be a good research quotient, but sadly, very few computations would be required for the results!

Scientific writing and publication points are attempted to promote research but have, plausibly, fostered the growth of predatory journals causing breach in scientific communication and decreasing the quality of research. Therefore, the quality of education and learning may take a backseat. This scientific misconduct needs to be rehabilitated in every possible modus, and the real goal of research in academia must be realised.

As we contemplate, where does JISPPD stand in this commercial scientific publishing industry?

The journal aims to provide a comprehensive and unswerving source of information on current clinical and research developments in the subject with a global perspective.

As we step into 2017, I am reminded of Jean Piaget's quote,

”Scientific knowledge is in perpetual evolution; it finds itself changed from one day to the next.”

The journal encourages the submission of manuscripts providing access to knowledge in the area of clinical practice at the highest standards and focusing on the applicability of research into practice.

With these thoughts, I wish all fellow colleagues Happy reading! and Season's Greetings!

Hope to see you all at the 14th ISPPD National PG Convention at Bengaluru in February.
