Emerging trends in pediatric dentistry

Pediatric dentistry as a profession has reformed immensely, largely owing to advances in technology, materials, and disease knowledge. Indeed, pedodontics has come a long way from tried-and-tested behavioral management skills to the more tech-savy virtual reality management. There is plenty to smile about!
When we see the current trends in practice, the future seems even more exciting. This years' National ISPPD conference theme is “Emerging trends in pediatric dentistry” and I am happy to give out an insight into the practical trends through this editorial.
Pediatric dental practice can be broadly divided into preventive and restorative aspects. When we look into the preventive aspect, which undeniably is the more neglected one in our country, many nonfluoride-based technologies and materials come into picture. Silver diamine fluoride, nano silver fluoride, and silver nitrate are some of the silver bullets which have certainly a long way to go. Self-etch sealants and reminieralizing pastes have made the preventive protocol much easier and effectual.
Pain management has witnessed inclusion of newer drugs and technologically driven delivery systems. Trends in behavioural management which form the core of pedodontics include various virtual reality and augmented reality-based techniques and technologies. These are quite engaging and at the same time effective. Newer caries detection methods and painless laser therapies have also graduated to provide faster and better results. Resin-based materials and techniques including infiltration techniques have made way for minimally invasive restorative dentistry. Pediatric endodontics has been transformed to rotary pedodontics with the advent of new file systems. Pediatric esthetic dentistry has seen the fad of preformed zirconia crowns which slowly are been incorporated into daily pediatric practice. The industrial prototypes responsible for radical changes in modern pediatric dentistry include translational research, holistic research, developing innovative technologies in early detection of the disease, and contemporary traditional medicines in oral care.
Truly, the upcoming trends in specialty pedodontic practice require an in-depth review of the entire spectrum of the specialty from the basic undergraduate and postgraduate level to the clinical practice of pedodontics. Amid several innovations at our disposal, it is certainly an exciting future for practical pediatric dentistry. These future prospects, backed with cutting-edge technology, however, come with the responsibility to closely monitor consequences. Our specialty will positively excel in the rapidly changing scene of dentistry in India with realistic appraisals of the present and future trends.
