Female feticide and female infanticide are problems that are widely prevalent in our country even today. Sexual discrimination against the girl child results in mental, social and physical neglect of the girl's health from "womb to tomb". Total disregard for the girl's health is one of the reasons in prenatal mortality and morbidity. A large number of girls fall prey to the criminal hands of those heartless doctors, who are involved in malpractices such as sex determination and abortion. They often use code language and destroy all records to avoid medico-legal complications. Myths like "father does not achieve salvation if son fails to perform funeral rights" have resulted in decline in the sex ratio. The number of female children is declining on a rapid rate. The census report of 2001 clearly indicates that the sex ratio in India has reduced to 933 females to 1000 males. Despite increase in literacy rate, people's views on sex discrimination are yet to change. We have a great task in front of us of changing the mindset of parents to these social and cultural myths and beliefs in order to create a sociocultural milieu conducive for the survival of the girl child.
Tender loving care is essential in the formative years of children. A girl child is often deprived of the basic necessities as mothers often refuse to breast feed their daughters. Lack of attention towards the child reflects as lack of good health, poor oral hygiene with no treatment being sought for dental caries and failure of the child to thrive. How can we achieve good oral health and a caries free generation when the basic problem is lack of attitude? It is essential for all of us to realize the role of a female as a daughter, sister, wife and mother. Only then can we fulfill the dream of establishing equilibrium of sex ratio - a balance! Just as massive resources are being invested in operation tiger - it is time we invest all our resources towards the upliftment of the status of a girl child as daughters are not for slaughters !!
