Caries experience in 3-7 year-old children in Haryana (India). |
p. 52 |
S Tewari PMID:11692822A study was carried out to know the prevalence of dental caries in 509 primary school children in the age group of 3-7 years. The mean prevalence of caries in all the age group from 3 to 6 year was 33.8% while the prevalence 6 years was 38.2%. It was seen that prevalence was significantly higher (P < 0.05) at the age of 6 years (dmft = 0.91 SD = 1.40) as compared to 3 years (dmft = 0.41 SD = 1.16). Deciduous molars were most affected by caries and prevalence of restored teeth was 1.2%. The difference between males and females was statistically significant and the mean dmft per child was found to be 0.73 and mean dmft per affected child was 2.37. Assessment regarding oral hygiene habits depicted that only 3% of children cleaned their teeth once a day with tooth brush and tooth paste. |

Midline space closure in the mixed dentition : a case report. |
p. 57 |
A Munshi, AK Munshi PMID:11692823Supernumerary teeth which occur both in the primary and the permanent dentition are seen more frequently in the permanent dentition causing a variety of pathological disturbances. Presented herewith is a case report of a patient with a mesiodens which had caused flaring of the maxillary central incisors and impeded normal eruption of the maxillary lateral incisors. Extraction of the mesiodens was carried out; subsequently followed by the space closure utilizing simple fixed orthodontic therapy. |

Caries prevalence amongst handicapped children of South Canara district, Karnataka. |
p. 67 |
DB Rao, AM Hegde, AK Munshi PMID:11692825This epidemiological investigation was carried out among 524 handicapped children in the age group of 3-30 years, attending 8 different non-residential special schools in South Canara district, Karnataka. The examination procedure and criteria were those recommended by W.H.O. in 1997. The total caries prevalence was found to be 71.56%. The mean deft in the primary dentition was found to be 3.06 +/- 3.14. The mean deft and DMFT in the mixed dentition were 3.32 +/- 2.82 and 1.14 +/- 1.08 respectively. The mean DMFT in the permanent dentition was 4.51 +/- 3.17. The prevalence of dental caries was higher in the mentally subnormal and handicapped children. The decayed component constituted the majority of the dental caries index. Lack of conservative approach to the treatment had been confirmed in the study. |

Stainless steel crown bridge replacing permanent molar in the adolescent patient : a case report. |
p. 74 |
M Dimri, A Jain PMID:11692826The loss of a permanent molar in young adolescent patient creates a need for early space maintenance and restoration of function. To establish function and esthetics short-term treatments include interim restorative approaches. This paper describes a functional, cost-effective stainless steel crown bridge as an interim restoration after the loss of permanent first molar in an early adolescent dentition. |

Noonan syndrome : a case report. |
p. 77 |
T Nirmal, MS Muthu, P Arranganal PMID:11692827In 1930 Ullrich and in 1938 Turner described females with a syndrome of short stature, sexual infantilism and a pattern of characteristic minor anomalies including pterygium colli. This syndrome named initially as the Urlich-Turner syndrome, was later called Noonan syndrome. It was later shown that the Ullrich-Turner Syndrome (UTS) is caused by monosomy X or a structural abnormality of the second X-chromosome. Presented here is a case of Noonan Syndrome in a four and half year old boy. |
